Background

phpMyAdmin is a popular web-based database management tool written in PHP. It provides a user-friendly interface for managing MySQL databases. The Swekey authentication feature in phpMyAdmin versions 3.x before 3.3.10.2 and 3.4.x before 3.4.3.1 is vulnerable to remote variable manipulation. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to modify the SESSION superglobal array by manipulating arbitrary parameters in the query string.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability exists in the libraries/auth/swekey/swekey.auth.lib.php file of phpMyAdmin. This file assigns values to arbitrary parameters referenced in the query string without proper validation. As a result, an attacker can craft a malicious request to modify the SESSION superglobal array, potentially leading to unauthorized access or privilege escalation. This vulnerability is classified as CWE-94 (Improper Control of Generation of Code).

How To Fix

Fixed versions by release line

The minimum fixed version depends on the release line you run.

  • >= 3.0, < 3.3.10.2 3.3.10.2
    composer require phpmyadmin/phpmyadmin:3.3.10.2
  • >= 3.4, < 3.4.3.1 3.4.3.1
    composer require phpmyadmin/phpmyadmin:3.4.3.1

Workaround

If upgrading phpMyAdmin is not immediately feasible, a temporary workaround is to disable the Swekey authentication feature. This can be done by modifying the phpMyAdmin configuration to remove or comment out the Swekey authentication related lines. However, it is strongly advised to upgrade to the patched version as soon as possible.

Conclusion

The phpMyAdmin Swekey authentication feature is vulnerable to remote variable manipulation, which can allow attackers to modify the SESSION superglobal array. To mitigate this vulnerability, it is recommended to upgrade phpMyAdmin to the patched versions or disable the Swekey authentication feature. Regularly updating software and following best security practices is crucial to protect against potential vulnerabilities.
