Background
Connect is a stack of middleware that is executed in order in each request. The "methodOverride" middleware allows the HTTP post to override the method of the request with the value of the "_method" post key or with the header "x-http-method-override". This vulnerability exists in the Sencha Labs Connect middleware of the Connect package.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability in node-connect before version 2.8.2 is due to an incomplete fix for CVE-2013-7370. The "methodOverride" middleware does not properly encode the req.method for output in the browser. As a result, an attacker can exploit this vulnerability by injecting malicious scripts through the "_method" post key, leading to reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks. An example of this attack is when a user sends a POST request with the payload "_method=<script src=http://nodesecurity.io/xss.js></script>", which results in a 404 page containing the unencoded script tag.
How To Fix
Latest published version: 3.7.0 as of 23 Oct 2026
npm install connect@3.7.0
Upgrading to it may include breaking changes; the version below is the minimum fixed release for this vulnerability.
If you need the minimum change
2.8.2
This is the first release that contains the fix.
npm install connect@2.8.2

Workaround
If updating or disabling the middleware is not feasible, a possible workaround is to manually sanitize and encode the req.method value before outputting it in the browser. This can be done using a library or custom code to ensure that any special characters are properly escaped.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the Node Connect Reflected Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability in Sencha Labs Connect middleware can be mitigated by updating to the latest version of Connect or disabling the methodOverride middleware. If neither option is feasible, manual sanitization and encoding of the req.method value can serve as a workaround. For further support on vulnerability remediation, please contact DevNack.com.
