Background

Moodle is an open-source learning management system (LMS) used by educational institutions worldwide. It provides a platform for creating and managing online courses, forums, and other collaborative learning activities. Moodle allows users to participate in discussions through its forum feature. However, prior to version 2.6.6 and 2.7.3, Moodle did not properly verify group permissions when accessing forums via the forum_get_discussions web service.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability in Moodle allows remote authenticated users to bypass group permissions and gain unauthorized access to forums. By exploiting this vulnerability, an attacker could potentially view, modify, or delete forum discussions that they should not have access to. This could lead to the exposure of sensitive information, disruption of learning activities, and a breach of user privacy.

How To Fix

Fixed versions by release line

The minimum fixed version depends on the release line you run.

  • >= 2.6.0, < 2.6.6 2.6.6
    composer require moodle/moodle:2.6.6
  • >= 2.7.0, < 2.7.3 2.7.3
    composer require moodle/moodle:2.7.3

Workaround

If upgrading to a secure version of Moodle is not immediately feasible, administrators can implement a temporary workaround by disabling the forum_get_discussions web service. This can be done by modifying the Moodle configuration to restrict access to the affected web service endpoint. However, this workaround may limit the functionality of Moodle and should only be considered as a temporary measure until the system can be upgraded to a secure version.

Conclusion

The vulnerability in Moodle that allows unauthorized access to forums via the forum_get_discussions web service can be mitigated by upgrading to a secure version of Moodle. Administrators should ensure they are running the latest secure release and regularly update their installations. If immediate upgrade is not possible, a temporary workaround of disabling the affected web service can be implemented. For further support on vulnerability remediation, please contact DevNack.com.
