Background
Moodle is an open-source learning management system (LMS) used by educational institutions worldwide. It provides a platform for creating and managing online courses, allowing educators to deliver content, interact with students, and track their progress. Moodle is written in PHP and offers a wide range of features and plugins to enhance the learning experience. However, a vulnerability has been discovered in Moodle versions 2.5.9 through 2.8.2 that allows remote authenticated users to obtain sensitive information.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability exists in the mod/lti/ajax.php file in Moodle. The system does not properly consider the moodle/course:manageactivities and mod/lti:addinstance capabilities before performing registered-tool list searches. This oversight allows remote authenticated users to exploit the LTI Ajax service and retrieve sensitive information. By sending requests to the LTI Ajax service, attackers can obtain data that they should not have access to, potentially compromising the confidentiality of user information and course content.
