Background
Apache Standard Taglibs is a library that provides a set of JSP tag libraries for common tasks such as XML parsing, formatting, and manipulation. It is widely used in Java web applications to simplify the development process. However, versions before 1.2.3 are vulnerable to an XML External Entity (XXE) attack, which can lead to arbitrary code execution or information disclosure.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability in Apache Standard Taglibs allows remote attackers to exploit a crafted XSLT extension in the <x:parse> or <x:transform> JSTL XML tag. By manipulating the XML input, an attacker can execute arbitrary code or conduct XXE attacks. This can result in unauthorized access to sensitive data, server-side request forgery (SSRF), or denial of service (DoS) attacks.
How To Fix
Minimum fixed version
1.2.3
This is the first release that contains the fix.

Workaround
If upgrading to the latest version is not feasible, a temporary workaround is to disable the usage of the <x:parse> and <x:transform> tags in your application. This can be done by removing or commenting out the corresponding code in your JSP files. However, this workaround may impact the functionality of your application, so upgrading to a patched version is strongly recommended.
Conclusion
The XXE vulnerability in Apache Standard Taglibs can lead to arbitrary code execution or information disclosure. It is crucial to upgrade to version 1.2.3 or later to mitigate this vulnerability. If upgrading is not possible immediately, disabling the <x:parse> and <x:transform> tags can serve as a temporary workaround. For further support on vulnerability remediation, contact DevNack.com.
