Background
xdLocalStorage is an npm package that provides a cross-domain local storage solution for web applications. It allows websites to securely share data across different domains. The package includes a receiveMessage() function in xdLocalStorage.js, which is responsible for handling incoming web messages. However, versions up to 2.0.5 do not implement any validation of the origin of these messages. This vulnerability can be exploited by remote attackers who can trick a user into visiting a malicious site. By sending malicious web messages, the attacker can compromise the confidentiality and integrity of data stored in the local storage of the vulnerable site.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability in xdLocalStorage allows remote attackers to manipulate the local storage of a vulnerable site by sending malicious web messages. Since the receiveMessage() function does not validate the origin of these messages, an attacker can send crafted messages from a malicious site to the vulnerable site. This can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data stored in the local storage, as well as the modification or deletion of this data. The impact of this vulnerability is high, as it can result in the compromise of user data and the integrity of the affected site.
How To Fix
No fixed version is published for this vulnerability.

Workaround
If updating the package is not immediately feasible, a temporary workaround can be implemented by modifying the receiveMessage() function in xdLocalStorage.js to include origin validation. Here is an example of how this can be done:
function receiveMessage(event) {
if (event.origin === 'https://trusted-site.com') {
// Handle the message
}
}
Conclusion
In conclusion, the vulnerability in xdLocalStorage allows remote attackers to compromise the confidentiality and integrity of data stored in the local storage of a vulnerable site. To mitigate this risk, it is recommended to update the xdLocalStorage package to a version that includes a fix for this issue. Alternatively, a temporary workaround can be implemented by modifying the receiveMessage() function to include origin validation.
