Background
Nunjucks is an open-source templating engine for JavaScript. It is widely used for rendering dynamic content in web applications. However, versions of nunjucks prior to 2.4.3 are vulnerable to a cross-site scripting (XSS) attack. This vulnerability occurs when specially structured user input in template variables is not properly escaped in auto-escape mode, allowing an attacker to inject malicious scripts into the rendered output.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability in nunjucks allows an attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the context of a victim's browser. By crafting a template variable with specially structured input, such as using an array for the keys, the escaping mechanism can be bypassed. This enables an attacker to inject malicious scripts that will be executed when the template is rendered. The impact of this vulnerability can range from stealing sensitive user information to performing actions on behalf of the victim.
How To Fix
Minimum fixed version
2.4.3
This is the first release that contains the fix.
npm install nunjucks@2.4.3

Workaround
If updating nunjucks is not immediately feasible, a temporary workaround is to manually sanitize user input before passing it to the template. This can be done using a library like DOMPurify to sanitize the input and ensure that any potentially malicious scripts are neutralized.
Conclusion
The vulnerability in nunjucks can lead to cross-site scripting attacks, allowing attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the context of a victim's browser. It is crucial to update nunjucks to the latest version or apply manual input sanitization to prevent exploitation. For further support on vulnerability remediation, please contact DevNack.com.
