Background

Apache Solr is an open-source search platform built on Apache Lucene. It provides full-text search, faceted search, and indexing capabilities. Solr is widely used in various applications for efficient and scalable search functionality. However, versions 5.5.5, 6.6.2, and 7.1.0 of Apache Solr are vulnerable to remote code execution.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability in Apache Solr is due to XML external entity expansion (XXE) in the XML Query Parser. By exploiting this vulnerability, an attacker can upload malicious data to the '/upload' request handler or perform blind XXE attacks using the FTP wrapper to read arbitrary local files from the Solr server. Additionally, the Config API add-listener command can be abused to reach the RunExecutableListener class, enabling remote code execution. Elasticsearch, which also uses Lucene, is not affected by this vulnerability.
