Background

Apache Hive is a data warehouse infrastructure built on top of Apache Hadoop for providing data summarization, query, and analysis. It allows users to query and manage large datasets stored in distributed storage. The vulnerability affects versions 2.1.0 to 2.3.2 of the Apache Hive package. The HPL/SQL extension to Hive introduces a flaw where a compromised or malicious FTP server can write files to arbitrary locations on the cluster. This vulnerability does not affect hive cli user and hiveserver2 user as hplsql is a separate command line script and needs to be invoked differently.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability arises when executing the 'COPY FROM FTP' statement using HPL/SQL extension to Hive. The FTP client code in HPL/SQL does not verify the destination location of the downloaded file. This allows a compromised or malicious FTP server to write the file to any location on the cluster where the command is run from. The impact of this vulnerability is that an attacker with control over the FTP server can potentially overwrite critical files or inject malicious code into the cluster.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the vulnerability in Apache Hive allows a compromised or malicious FTP server to write files to arbitrary locations on the cluster. This can lead to unauthorized access, data corruption, or the execution of malicious code. It is crucial to upgrade to the fixed version of Apache Hive (2.3.3 or later) to mitigate this vulnerability. For further support on vulnerability remediation, please contact DevNack.com.
