Background

The org.apache.commons:commons-compress package is a Java library that provides functionality for working with various compression and archive formats, including ZIP. It is commonly used in applications that need to create, read, or manipulate ZIP archives. This vulnerability affects versions 1.11 to 1.15 of the package.

Vulnerability Detail

A specially crafted ZIP archive can trigger an infinite loop in the extra field parser of Apache Commons Compress, which is used by the ZipFile and ZipArchiveInputStream classes. This vulnerability allows an attacker to mount a denial of service (DoS) attack against services that utilize the Compress' zip package. By sending a malicious ZIP archive, an attacker can cause the affected application to consume excessive CPU resources, leading to a significant degradation in performance or even a complete system freeze.
