Background
Node-RED is an open-source flow-based programming tool that allows users to create applications by wiring together hardware devices, APIs, and online services. It provides a web-based interface for visually creating and managing flows. Node-RED versions prior to 0.20.8 are vulnerable to Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks. This vulnerability arises from the package's failure to properly sanitize the 'name' field in new Flows, enabling attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the victim's browser.
Vulnerability Detail
The Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Node-RED allows an attacker to inject malicious JavaScript code into the application, which is then executed in the context of the victim's browser. This can lead to various consequences, including unauthorized access to sensitive information, session hijacking, and the ability to perform actions on behalf of the victim. The vulnerability is rated as MODERATE severity and has been assigned the Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) ID CWE-79.
