Background
The async-git package is an npm package that provides asynchronous Git operations for Node.js applications. It allows developers to interact with Git repositories programmatically. However, versions before 1.13.2 are vulnerable to Command Injection via shell meta-characters (back-ticks). This vulnerability allows an attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the system where the package is being used.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability in async-git arises from a lack of input validation when executing Git commands. An attacker can exploit this by injecting malicious commands using shell meta-characters, such as back-ticks. For example, the command git.reset('atouch HACKEDb') can be used to execute the arbitrary command 'touch HACKED'. This can lead to various consequences, including unauthorized access, data manipulation, or even complete system compromise.
How To Fix
Minimum fixed version
1.13.2
This is the first release that contains the fix.
npm install async-git@1.13.2
