Background

Rendertron is an open-source project that provides a middleware for rendering JavaScript-rendered pages on the server side. It utilizes headless Chrome to capture screenshots of web pages. This vulnerability affects Rendertron versions prior to 3.0.0. The vulnerability allows an attacker to exploit a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability, enabling them to force Rendertron to render internal sites it has access to and display them as screenshots.

Vulnerability Detail

The SSRF vulnerability in Rendertron arises due to insufficient input validation. By crafting a specially designed webpage, an attacker can manipulate Rendertron to make requests to internal sites and retrieve their content. This can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive information, potential data leakage, and further exploitation of internal systems. The vulnerability has a moderate severity rating (CWE-918).
