Background
The kube-apiserver is a component of Kubernetes that provides the API interface for managing the cluster. It is responsible for validating and processing requests from various Kubernetes components. This vulnerability affects versions 1.18.17 to 1.20.5 of the k8s.io/kubernetes package written in Go. The vulnerability allows unauthorized node updates to bypass a Validating Admission Webhook, potentially leading to the acceptance of requests that should be blocked.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability arises when an update action on node resources is performed and an admission controller is in place to validate the action. The admission controller receives information that may contain old configurations, which can overwrite values used for validation. As the overwriting occurs before the validation, the admission controller may accept requests that should be denied. This vulnerability only affects users running a Validating Admission Webhook for Nodes that denies admission based on the old state of the Node object. It does not impact calls from kubelets that go through the built-in NodeRestriction admission plugin. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 6.5 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H).
