Background

Ericsson CodeChecker is a Python package available on PyPI that provides a static code analysis tool for detecting security vulnerabilities in source code. It is commonly used in software development to identify potential issues and improve code quality. However, prior to version 6.18.2, CodeChecker is susceptible to a Stored Cross-site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the comments component of the reports viewer. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the POST JSON data of the /CodeCheckerService API.

Vulnerability Detail

The Stored Cross-site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Ericsson CodeChecker arises due to insufficient input sanitization in the comments component of the reports viewer. Attackers can exploit this vulnerability by submitting malicious data through the /CodeCheckerService API, which is then stored and displayed in the reports viewer. When unsuspecting users view the affected reports, the injected script or HTML is executed in their browsers, potentially leading to unauthorized access, data theft, or other malicious activities. The vulnerability has a Moderate severity rating according to the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) and is classified under CWE-79.
