Background

Argo CD is an open-source continuous delivery tool for Kubernetes that automates the deployment of applications. It allows users to define, manage, and deploy applications declaratively using Git repositories. Argo CD is written in Go and is widely used in Kubernetes environments. However, all versions of Argo CD are vulnerable to a path traversal and symlink dereference issue.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability in Argo CD allows an attacker to pass arbitrary values files to be consumed by Helm charts. Additionally, the attacker can create special Helm chart packages containing value files that are actually symbolic links, pointing to arbitrary files outside the repository's root directory. This can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive or confidential data. The impact is particularly critical in environments that use encrypted value files containing secrets, as the attacker can decrypt these secrets to disk before rendering the Helm chart. Furthermore, the error messages from helm template can be used for file system enumeration. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 7.7.
