Background

OpenTSDB is a time series database designed to store and analyze large amounts of data in real-time. It provides a legacy HTTP query API and a logging endpoint for users to interact with the database. However, these endpoints lack proper validation of parameters reflected in error messages, making it possible for an attacker to inject and execute malicious JavaScript within the browser of a targeted OpenTSDB user. This vulnerability shares the same root cause as CVE-2018-13003, a reflected XSS vulnerability with the suggestion endpoint.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability in OpenTSDB allows an attacker to exploit insufficient validation of parameters reflected in error messages. By injecting malicious JavaScript, an attacker can execute arbitrary code within the browser of a targeted OpenTSDB user. This can lead to various consequences, such as unauthorized access to sensitive information, session hijacking, or the manipulation of user actions within the application.

How To Fix

No fixed version is published for this vulnerability.

Workaround

As a temporary workaround, users can disable or restrict access to the legacy HTTP query API and the logging endpoint. This can be done by modifying the OpenTSDB configuration to block or limit requests to these endpoints. However, this workaround may impact the functionality of certain features or integrations that rely on these endpoints.

Conclusion

The Cross Site Scripting vulnerability in OpenTSDB allows an attacker to execute malicious JavaScript code within the browser of a targeted user. It is crucial to update OpenTSDB to the latest version and ensure proper security measures are in place to mitigate the risk.
