Background

Apache Airflow is an open-source platform designed to programmatically author, schedule, and monitor workflows. It allows users to define workflows as Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) and provides a rich user interface to manage and visualize these workflows. Airflow is widely used in data engineering and data science for orchestrating complex data pipelines. However, with the introduction of version 3.0, a vulnerability emerged that affects the handling of sensitive information within Connections, potentially exposing sensitive data to unauthorized users.

Vulnerability Detail

In Apache Airflow version 3.0.3, a change was made to restrict access to sensitive connection fields to Connection Editing Users, implementing a 'write-only' model for sensitive values. Unfortunately, this model was violated, allowing users with READ permissions to view sensitive connection information through both the API and the UI. This exposure bypassed the configuration option 'AIRFLOW__CORE__HIDE_SENSITIVE_VAR_CONN_FIELDS', leading to potential unauthorized access to sensitive data. This issue does not affect Airflow 2.x, where such exposure was the intended behavior.

How To Fix

Latest published version: 3.3.2 as of 22 Oct 2026

pip install --upgrade "apache-airflow==3.3.2"

Upgrading to it may include breaking changes; the version below is the minimum fixed release for this vulnerability.

If you need the minimum change

3.0.4

This is the first release that contains the fix.

pip install --upgrade "apache-airflow==3.0.4"

Workaround

As a temporary workaround, users can limit access to the API and UI for users who should not have READ permissions on sensitive connection fields until they can upgrade to the patched version.

Conclusion

The vulnerability CVE-2025-54831 in Apache Airflow 3.0.3 poses a risk by exposing sensitive connection details to unauthorized users. It is crucial for users to upgrade to version 3.0.4 or later to mitigate this risk. Additionally, users can utilize tools like Vulert to monitor for vulnerabilities in their applications.
