Background

Apache Tomcat is an open-source implementation of the Java Servlet, JavaServer Pages, and Java Expression Language technologies. It is widely used for deploying Java applications. The software is known for its robustness, scalability, and support for various Java technologies. However, certain versions of Apache Tomcat are vulnerable to a relative path traversal issue, which can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive files and potential remote code execution.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability arises from a regression introduced in the fix for bug 60013, where the rewritten URL was normalized before being decoded. This flaw allows attackers to manipulate the request URI, potentially bypassing security constraints that protect sensitive directories like /WEB-INF/ and /META-INF/. If PUT requests are enabled, this could lead to the upload of malicious files, resulting in remote code execution. The affected versions include Apache Tomcat from 11.0.0-M1 to 11.0.10, 10.1.0-M1 to 10.1.44, and 9.0.0.M11 to 9.0.108, with older EOL versions also being susceptible.

How To Fix

Fixed versions by release line

The minimum fixed version depends on the release line you run.

  • >= 9.0.0-M11, < 9.0.109 9.0.109
  • >= 10.1.0-M1, < 10.1.45 10.1.45
  • >= 11.0.0-M1, < 11.0.11 11.0.11

Workaround

As a temporary workaround, if upgrading is not immediately possible, consider disabling PUT requests for untrusted users or restricting access to sensitive directories until a patch can be applied.

Conclusion

In summary, CVE-2025-55752 is a significant vulnerability in Apache Tomcat that can lead to serious security risks if not addressed. Users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to the latest patched versions to mitigate these risks.
