Background
n8n is an open-source workflow automation tool that allows users to connect various applications and services to automate tasks. It features a visual interface for creating workflows, supports numerous integrations, and is designed for both technical and non-technical users. However, it has a vulnerability that allows authenticated users to inject malicious scripts into workflows, posing a significant security risk.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability arises from the ability of authenticated users with permissions to create or modify workflows to inject arbitrary scripts into pages rendered by the n8n application. This can be done through various nodes, including the Form Trigger node, Chat Trigger node, Send & Wait node, Webhook Node, and Chat Node. The injected scripts execute in the browsers of users who visit the affected pages, leading to potential session hijacking and account takeover.
How To Fix
Latest published version: 2.44.6 as of 22 Oct 2026
npm install n8n@2.44.6
Upgrading to it may include breaking changes; the versions below are the minimum fixed release for this vulnerability.

Workaround
If immediate upgrading is not feasible, administrators can implement temporary mitigations such as limiting workflow creation and editing permissions to trusted users only. Additionally, the Webhook node can be disabled by adding 'n8n-nodes-base.webhook' to the NODES_EXCLUDE environment variable.
Conclusion
The n8n application has a critical vulnerability that allows for stored XSS attacks via various nodes. Users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to the latest patched versions to mitigate this risk. Temporary workarounds can be employed while planning for an upgrade.
