Background

File Browser is an open-source file management tool that allows users to manage files on a server through a web interface. It provides features such as file uploads, downloads, sharing, and user management. However, a critical vulnerability has been identified that allows unauthenticated users to register as administrators if certain default permissions are set.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability arises from the self-registration feature of File Browser, which, when enabled, allows any unauthenticated visitor to create a full administrator account. This occurs when the default user permissions include admin rights (perm.admin = true). The signup handler does not implement any server-side checks to prevent the assignment of admin privileges to newly registered users, leading to severe security risks. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to gain full control over the server, including access to all files, user management, and server settings.

Workaround

As a temporary workaround, disable the self-registration feature by setting 'signup = false' in the settings until the package is updated. This can be done by sending a PUT request to the settings API with the following JSON payload: {"signup": false}.

Conclusion

The CVE-2026-32760 vulnerability in File Browser poses a significant security risk by allowing unauthenticated users to create admin accounts. It is crucial to update to the patched version or disable the self-registration feature to mitigate this risk.
