Background

The kernel-rt packages provide the Real Time Linux Kernel, which enables fine-tuning for systems with extremely high determinism requirements.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability (CVE-2023-0266) in the ALSA pcm component allows an unprivileged local attacker to trigger a use-after-free (UAF) condition by exploiting a race condition in the snd_ctl_elem_read function. This could lead to privilege escalation or denial of service attacks. Another vulnerability (CVE-2022-4744) in the kernel's tun driver allows a local attacker to trigger a double free vulnerability, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. Additionally, a CPU soft lockup vulnerability (CVE-2022-4269) in the kernel's TC mirred egress-to-ingress action can cause a denial of service condition.

How To Fix

Minimum fixed version

5.14.0-162.22.2.rt21.186.el9_1

This is the first release that contains the fix.

sudo dnf update kernel-rt

Conclusion

It is important to update the kernel-rt packages to address these security vulnerabilities. Failure to do so may expose systems to potential privilege escalation, denial of service, or arbitrary code execution attacks. For further support on vulnerability remediation, please contact DevNack.com.
