Background
StringIO is a class in Ruby that provides a way to treat a string as a file. It allows reading from and writing to a string as if it were a file. This vulnerability affects StringIO versions 3.0.1 through 3.0.6 in Ruby 3.0.x and versions 3.1.x through 3.1.4 in Ruby 3.1.x. The ungetbyte and ungetc methods in StringIO can read beyond the end of a string, and subsequent calls to StringIO.gets may return the memory value.
Vulnerability Detail
The buffer-overread vulnerability in StringIO can lead to the exposure of sensitive information or the execution of arbitrary code. By manipulating the ungetbyte and ungetc methods, an attacker can read memory values beyond the intended boundaries of a string. This can result in the disclosure of sensitive data or the execution of malicious code, potentially leading to a compromise of the system.
