Background
Cilium Operator is a component of Cilium, an open-source networking, observability, and security solution that utilizes an eBPF-based dataplane. It is designed to enhance network connectivity, visibility, and protection within Kubernetes clusters. Cilium Operator is responsible for managing the deployment and configuration of Cilium in a Kubernetes environment.
Vulnerability Detail
Prior to versions 1.13.13, 1.14.8, and 1.15.2, Cilium clusters with IPsec enabled and traffic matching Layer 7 policies were susceptible to a vulnerability. This vulnerability allowed IPsec-eligible traffic between a node's Envoy proxy and pods on other nodes, as well as IPsec-eligible traffic between a node's DNS proxy and pods on other nodes, to be sent unencrypted. This means that sensitive data transmitted through these channels could be intercepted and compromised. The issue has been addressed in Cilium versions 1.13.13, 1.14.8, and 1.15.2.
How To Fix

FAQ
Cilium Operator is a component of Cilium that manages the deployment and configuration of Cilium in a Kubernetes environment.
IPsec (Internet Protocol Security) is a protocol suite used to secure IP communications by authenticating and encrypting network packets.
This vulnerability affects Cilium clusters with IPsec enabled and traffic matching Layer 7 policies. It allows IPsec-eligible traffic between Envoy proxies and pods, as well as DNS proxies and pods, to be sent unencrypted.
The potential consequences of this vulnerability include the interception and compromise of sensitive data transmitted between Envoy proxies and pods, as well as DNS proxies and pods.
To mitigate this vulnerability, it is recommended to upgrade Cilium Operator to version 1.13.13, 1.14.8, or 1.15.2, depending on the version currently in use.
