Background

ORAS is an open source software that allows pushing OCI Artifacts to OCI Conformant registries. It serves as both a CLI tool and a Go Module. The vulnerability affects ORAS versions 0.4.0 to 0.9.0. ORAS supports the extraction of gzipped tarballs to a user-specified directory. However, a flaw in the directory support feature allows malicious artifact providers to create symbolic links and hard links that can overwrite or modify files outside of the specified directory. This can lead to unauthorized access and potential compromise of the host filesystem.

Vulnerability Detail

The zip-slip vulnerability in ORAS allows an attacker to manipulate tarballs in a way that enables them to write, link, or overwrite files on the host filesystem outside of the intended directory. This can be exploited by a malicious artifact provider to gain unauthorized access and potentially execute arbitrary code with the same permissions as the user running the oras pull command. The vulnerability has a CVSSv3 severity score of 7.5 (High).
