Background

TensorFlow is an open source platform for machine learning. It provides a comprehensive ecosystem of tools, libraries, and resources for building and deploying machine learning models. TensorFlow is widely used in various industries and research fields for tasks such as image recognition, natural language processing, and recommendation systems. However, a vulnerability has been discovered in TensorFlow that can lead to a denial of service attack.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability in TensorFlow occurs when the MaxPool function is provided with a window size input array (ksize) that has dimensions greater than the input tensor (input). This triggers a CHECK fail in the GPU kernel, which can be exploited to launch a denial of service attack. The issue has been patched in the GitHub commit 32d7bd3defd134f21a4e344c8dfd40099aaf6b18 and will be included in TensorFlow 2.10.0. The fix will also be backported to TensorFlow 2.9.1, TensorFlow 2.8.1, and TensorFlow 2.7.2, as these versions are still within the supported range. There are currently no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

How To Fix

Fixed versions by release line

The minimum fixed version depends on the release line you run.

  • < 2.7.2 2.7.2
  • >= 2.8.0, < 2.8.1 2.8.1
  • >= 2.9.0, < 2.9.1 2.9.1
