Background
Audacity is a multi-track audio editor that allows users to record, edit, and manipulate audio files. It is widely used for various audio editing tasks and is available for multiple platforms. However, a vulnerability has been discovered in Audacity that can lead to a denial of service (DoS) attack when processing a specially crafted .wav file with a malformed FORMATCHUNK structure containing many channels.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability in Audacity arises from a flaw in the processing of .wav files. When a .wav file with a crafted FORMATCHUNK structure is opened, the application fails to handle the excessive number of channels correctly. This can result in memory corruption and ultimately cause the application to crash, leading to a denial of service condition. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by enticing a user to open a malicious .wav file, potentially causing disruption or loss of data.
How To Fix
Minimum fixed version
