Background
dbus is an asynchronous inter-process communication system used in Debian 7. It allows different processes to communicate with each other on the same machine or across different machines. dbus is responsible for activating system services and handling inter-process communication requests. This vulnerability affects dbus-daemon, the main component of dbus, on systems with systemd-style service activation.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2015-0245, allows a local user to launch a denial of service attack on dbus-daemon. By forging ActivationFailure messages from non-root processes, the attacker can trick dbus-daemon into believing that systemd failed to activate a system service. As a result, dbus-daemon sends an error reply back to the requester, causing a denial of service.
