Background
Icedove is an email client based on Mozilla Thunderbird, which is widely used for sending, receiving, and managing emails. It incorporates the Mozilla Network Security Service (NSS) library for handling security-related functions. The NSS library provides cryptographic services, including parsing ASN.1 data used in signatures. However, a vulnerability has been discovered in the way NSS parses this data, making it susceptible to a signature forgery attack.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability in icedove allows an attacker to craft ASN.1 data to forge RSA certificates with a valid certification chain to a trusted Certificate Authority (CA). By exploiting this vulnerability, an attacker can create fraudulent certificates that appear legitimate to the system, potentially leading to various security breaches and unauthorized access to sensitive information.
How To Fix
Minimum fixed version
24.8.1-1~deb7u1
This is the first release that contains the fix.
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade icedove

FAQ
Icedove is an email client based on Mozilla Thunderbird, providing features for managing emails, contacts, and calendars.
The Mozilla Network Security Service (NSS) library is a set of cryptographic libraries used by various applications, including icedove, to handle security-related functions.
ASN.1 (Abstract Syntax Notation One) is a standard for representing structured data in a machine-readable format. It is commonly used in cryptographic protocols and certificate formats.
A signature forgery attack involves creating a fraudulent digital signature that appears valid to the system. In this case, the vulnerability allows an attacker to forge RSA certificates with a valid certification chain to a trusted CA.
The vulnerability in icedove can lead to unauthorized access to sensitive information, as attackers can create fraudulent certificates that appear legitimate. This can result in various security breaches, including man-in-the-middle attacks and impersonation of trusted entities.
