Background

lighttpd is a small webserver known for its simplicity and speed. It is commonly used for serving static and dynamic content on websites. However, the lighttpd package in Debian 7 (wheezy) is vulnerable to the POODLE attack through the use of SSLv3. This protocol is now disabled by default to mitigate the risk of exploitation.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2014-3566, allows an attacker to exploit the SSLv3 protocol to decrypt secure communications. This attack, known as POODLE (Padding Oracle On Downgraded Legacy Encryption), takes advantage of the protocol's fallback behavior to SSLv3 when more secure protocols are not available. By manipulating the SSLv3 handshake, an attacker can force the use of weak encryption and eventually decrypt sensitive information, such as login credentials or session cookies. This vulnerability poses a significant risk to the confidentiality and integrity of data transmitted over SSL/TLS connections.

How To Fix

Minimum fixed version

1.4.31-4+deb7u4

This is the first release that contains the fix.

sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade lighttpd

Workaround

There is no specific workaround mentioned in the vulnerability report. However, users can mitigate the risk by ensuring that SSLv3 is disabled in their lighttpd configuration. This can be achieved by modifying the server configuration file to explicitly disable SSLv3 and enable more secure protocols, such as TLS 1.2.

Conclusion

The lighttpd package in Debian 7 (wheezy) is vulnerable to the POODLE attack through the use of SSLv3. To mitigate this vulnerability, it is crucial to upgrade to version 1.4.31-4+deb7u4 or later, which disables SSLv3 by default. Additionally, users can further enhance security by explicitly disabling SSLv3 in their lighttpd configuration and enabling more secure protocols like TLS 1.2. FAQ

lighttpd is a lightweight web server designed for high-performance environments. It is known for its low memory footprint and efficient handling of concurrent connections.

The POODLE attack is a security vulnerability that targets the SSLv3 protocol. It allows an attacker to decrypt secure communications by exploiting the protocol's fallback behavior.

The POODLE attack works by manipulating the SSLv3 handshake to force the use of weak encryption. By repeatedly decrypting and modifying encrypted data, an attacker can eventually recover the original plaintext.

The POODLE attack can lead to the disclosure of sensitive information, such as login credentials or session cookies. This can result in unauthorized access to user accounts and potential data breaches.

You can use Vulert's playground (https://vulert.com/scanner) to check if your lighttpd installation is affected by this vulnerability. Simply upload your package-lock.json file, and Vulert will analyze it for any open-source vulnerabilities, including the POODLE attack.
