Background
python-tornado is a Python web framework and asynchronous networking library. It provides a way to build web applications that can handle high levels of traffic and concurrency. However, it was discovered that python-tornado is susceptible to the BREACH attack. This attack allows an attacker to extract sensitive information by exploiting the compression of encrypted data. In the case of python-tornado, the XSRF token was vulnerable to this attack. To mitigate this vulnerability, the XSRF token is now encoded with a random mask on each request, making it safe to include in compressed pages.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability in python-tornado arises from the use of a predictable XSRF token. This token is used to protect against cross-site request forgery (XSRF) attacks by ensuring that requests originate from the same site. However, an attacker can exploit the BREACH attack to extract the XSRF token and use it to forge requests. By encoding the XSRF token with a random mask on each request, python-tornado prevents the token from being vulnerable to the BREACH attack.
How To Fix
Minimum fixed version
2.3-2+deb7u1
This is the first release that contains the fix.
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade python-tornado

FAQ
python-tornado is a Python web framework and asynchronous networking library.
The BREACH attack is a security vulnerability that allows an attacker to extract sensitive information by exploiting the compression of encrypted data.
An XSRF token is a security measure used to protect against cross-site request forgery (XSRF) attacks by ensuring that requests originate from the same site.
The vulnerability in python-tornado could allow an attacker to extract the XSRF token and use it to forge requests, potentially leading to unauthorized actions on behalf of the user.
To fix the vulnerability, you should upgrade your python-tornado packages to version 2.3-2+deb7u1 or later.
