Background

SPIP is a website publishing engine written in PHP. It provides a platform for creating and managing dynamic websites. SPIP allows users to create and publish content, manage user accounts, and install plugins to extend its functionality.

Vulnerability Detail

The SPIP software is affected by multiple reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities allow an attacker to inject arbitrary HTML code into specially crafted URLs, which can be executed in the context of an authenticated SPIP user. The specific vulnerabilities are:

  • CVE-2016-9997: The 'id' parameter of the 'puce_statut' action is not properly sanitized, allowing an attacker to inject arbitrary HTML code.
  • CVE-2016-9998: The 'plugin' parameter of the 'info_plugin' action is not properly sanitized, allowing an attacker to inject arbitrary HTML code.

How To Fix

Minimum fixed version

2.1.17-1+deb7u8

This is the first release that contains the fix.

sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade spip

Workaround

There are no known workarounds for these vulnerabilities. It is essential to apply the recommended fix by upgrading SPIP to the latest version.

Conclusion

Multiple reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities have been discovered in SPIP. These vulnerabilities can be exploited by tricking authenticated SPIP users into opening specially crafted URLs, allowing an attacker to inject and execute arbitrary HTML code. To mitigate these vulnerabilities, it is recommended to upgrade SPIP to version 2.1.17-1+deb7u8 or later. For further support on vulnerability remediation, please contact DevNack.com.

FAQ

SPIP is a website publishing engine written in PHP. It provides a platform for creating and managing dynamic websites.

A reflected XSS vulnerability occurs when user input is not properly sanitized and is directly included in the HTML output of a web application. This allows an attacker to inject malicious code that is executed in the context of other users accessing the vulnerable page.

An attacker can exploit these vulnerabilities by tricking an authenticated SPIP user into opening a specially crafted URL. The injected HTML code will then be executed in the user's browser, potentially allowing the attacker to perform actions on behalf of the user or steal sensitive information.

The only known mitigation is to upgrade SPIP to the latest version, which includes the necessary fixes to properly sanitize user input and prevent the execution of arbitrary HTML code.

There is no evidence of these vulnerabilities being actively exploited in the wild at the time of this advisory. However, it is crucial to apply the recommended fix to ensure the security of your SPIP installation.
