Background
The tcpreplay package is a suite of tools used for replaying network traffic saved in pcap files. It includes the tcprewrite program, which is responsible for rewriting packet data. The vulnerability lies in the tcprewrite program's failure to validate the size of frames it processes. This issue becomes critical when processing huge frames, which can trigger a segmentation fault. Such frames are commonly encountered when capturing packets on interfaces with an MTU of or close to 65536, such as the loopback interface 'lo' in the Linux kernel.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability in the tcprewrite program allows for a segmentation fault to occur when processing large frames. This can be exploited by an attacker to crash the program or potentially execute arbitrary code. The issue arises due to the lack of size validation in the frame processing logic. If an interface with a large MTU is used, the program may encounter frames that exceed its processing capabilities, leading to a crash.
How To Fix
Minimum fixed version
3.4.3-2+wheezy2
This is the first release that contains the fix.
sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade tcpreplay
