Background

tryton-server is a package in the Debian ecosystem that provides a server for the Tryton application framework. Tryton is a three-tier high-level general-purpose application platform that is used to build business applications. The tryton-server package is responsible for handling various server-side functionalities of Tryton. However, a security vulnerability has been discovered in tryton-server that allows an attacker to open files outside the root directory of trytond by using a forged Report name.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability in tryton-server arises from the file_open syscall not properly preventing the use of an up-level reference in a file name. This allows an attacker to manipulate the Report name and open files located outside the intended root directory of trytond. By exploiting this vulnerability, an attacker could gain unauthorized access to sensitive files or execute arbitrary code on the system. This vulnerability affects tryton-server versions prior to 2.2.4-1+deb7u3 in the Debian 8 Jessie ecosystem.

How To Fix

Minimum fixed version

2.2.4-1+deb7u3

This is the first release that contains the fix.

sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade tryton-server

Workaround

There is no specific workaround mentioned for this vulnerability.

Conclusion

The vulnerability in tryton-server allows an attacker to open files outside the intended root directory, potentially leading to unauthorized access or arbitrary code execution. It is recommended to upgrade the tryton-server package to version 2.2.4-1+deb7u3 or later to mitigate this vulnerability.
