Background

xdg-utils is a collection of command-line utilities for interacting with the desktop environment. It provides a set of tools that allow applications to integrate with the desktop environment in a standardized way. One of these tools is xdg-open, which automatically opens URLs in the user's preferred application. This vulnerability affects xdg-open and can lead to the execution of arbitrary commands remotely. It specifically affects /bin/sh implementations that do not properly sanitize local variables. Debian's default /bin/sh, Dash, is affected, while Bash as /bin/sh is not vulnerable.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability in xdg-utils allows an attacker to execute arbitrary commands remotely. By exploiting the lack of proper sanitization of local variables in affected /bin/sh implementations, an attacker can manipulate the input to xdg-open and execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the user running the command. This can lead to unauthorized access, data leakage, or further compromise of the system. It is important to note that this vulnerability only affects systems using Dash as /bin/sh.

How To Fix

Minimum fixed version

1.1.0~rc1+git20111210-6+deb7u3

This is the first release that contains the fix.

sudo apt-get install --only-upgrade xdg-utils

Workaround

If upgrading the xdg-utils package is not immediately possible, users can consider using Bash as the /bin/sh interpreter instead of Dash. Bash is not vulnerable to this specific issue. To change the default /bin/sh interpreter to Bash, the following command can be used:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure dash

This will prompt the user to choose between Dash and Bash as the default /bin/sh interpreter. Selecting Bash will mitigate the vulnerability.

Conclusion

The vulnerability in xdg-utils allows for the execution of arbitrary commands remotely. It is important to upgrade the xdg-utils package to the fixed version or switch to Bash as the /bin/sh interpreter to mitigate this vulnerability. Exploiting this vulnerability can allow an attacker to execute arbitrary commands remotely. This can lead to unauthorized access, data leakage, or further compromise of the system.

You can use Vulert's playground at Vulert Scanner to check if your system is affected by this vulnerability. Simply upload your package-lock.json file, and Vulert will analyze it for any open-source vulnerabilities, including this one.

If upgrading the xdg-utils package is not immediately possible, users can switch the /bin/sh interpreter to Bash instead of Dash. Bash is not vulnerable to this specific issue.

You can update the xdg-utils package using the package manager of your Linux distribution. For example, on Debian-based systems, you can use the following command:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade xdg-utils

This will fetch the latest version of the package and install it on your system.
