Background

The package github.com/unknwon/cae is a Go package that provides functionality for working with zip archives. It allows users to extract files from zip archives and includes features for securely handling file paths. However, a vulnerability has been discovered in the ExtractTo function of the package, which does not properly escape file paths in zip archives containing leading or non-leading "..". This can be exploited by an attacker to add or replace files system-wide.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability (CVE-2020-7668) in github.com/unknwon/cae allows an attacker to perform path traversal attacks by manipulating file paths in zip archives. By including leading or non-leading ".." in the file paths, an attacker can bypass security measures and access files outside of the intended directory. This can lead to unauthorized access, information disclosure, or even remote code execution depending on the context in which the extracted files are used.
