Background

The ocxl package is a component of the Linux Kernel that provides support for Open Coherent Accelerator Processor Interface (OpenCAPI) devices. OpenCAPI is a high-performance bus interface that allows accelerators, such as Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), to be connected to the CPU. The ocxl_file_register_afu function in ocxl is responsible for registering an Accelerator Function Unit (AFU) with the kernel. This function is vulnerable to a double free issue, which can lead to memory corruption and potentially allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial-of-service.

Vulnerability Detail

The double free vulnerability in ocxl_file_register_afu occurs when the function attempts to free a previously allocated memory block twice. This can be exploited by an attacker to manipulate the freed memory and potentially execute arbitrary code. The vulnerability was introduced in version v5.2 of the Linux Kernel and was fixed in version v5.15.46. The impact and attack plausibility of this vulnerability have not been proven yet.

Conclusion

The double free vulnerability in ocxl_file_register_afu can lead to memory corruption and potential code execution. It is crucial to update the Linux Kernel to version v5.15.46 or later to mitigate this vulnerability. For further support on vulnerability remediation, please contact DevNack.com.
