Background

The net package in the Linux Kernel provides networking functionality and includes various subcomponents. One of these subcomponents is mdiobus, which is responsible for managing the Media Independent Interface (MII) bus. The MII bus is used for communication between Ethernet PHYs and the Ethernet controller. The mdiobus_register function is used to register an mdiobus instance with the kernel. However, there is a memory leak in the __mdiobus_register function, which can lead to memory exhaustion over time.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability (UVI-2021-1002014) in the net package's mdiobus component allows an attacker to cause a memory leak by repeatedly registering mdiobus instances. This can result in memory exhaustion, leading to a denial-of-service (DoS) condition. The vulnerability has been fixed in Linux Kernel version v5.4.156 by commit b0feaa8376f52357bf2fd020d0c471713a859728.

Workaround

There is no known workaround for this vulnerability. It is necessary to apply the fix by updating the Linux Kernel.

Conclusion

The memory leak vulnerability in the net package's mdiobus component can be fixed by updating the Linux Kernel. It is recommended to apply the fix as soon as possible to prevent potential memory exhaustion and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks.
