Background

The @hrmony/valuenet package is an npm library designed for various functionalities within JavaScript applications. However, it has been found to contain malicious code that compromises the security of systems where it is installed. This vulnerability allows attackers to harvest sensitive information from the environment and send it to a remote server.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability originates from the package's main module, which auto-executes upon being required or imported. It sends sensitive installer-side secrets to a hardcoded attacker endpoint. The malicious code queries the AWS Instance Metadata Service, harvesting critical information such as instance identity, EC2 credentials, and user data. It also enumerates the entire process environment and reads Kubernetes secrets, transmitting all collected data to the attacker's server. This poses a severe risk as any system running this package is considered fully compromised.

How To Fix

This package is malicious. Remove it and rotate any credentials it could have accessed.

npm uninstall @hrmony/valuenet

If it arrived as a transitive dependency, remove the package that pulled it in, then reinstall.

As a temporary measure, you can isolate your application from the network to prevent data exfiltration while you remove the package. Additionally, rotate all secrets and keys stored on the affected system from a secure environment.

Conclusion

The @hrmony/valuenet package contains a critical vulnerability that allows attackers to exfiltrate sensitive information. Immediate action is required to remove the package and secure your environment. Regular monitoring for vulnerabilities using tools like Vulert is recommended to maintain security.
