Background

The oleh-modal package is an npm library designed to provide a wallet-connect modal component for applications. It aims to facilitate user interactions with cryptocurrency wallets like MetaMask, Phantom, Rabby, and OKX. However, the package has been identified as a credential-harvesting phishing kit that deceives users into entering sensitive information.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability originates from the malicious code embedded within the oleh-modal package version 1.0.0. This code renders fake wallet recovery modals that mimic legitimate wallet extensions, tricking users into entering their seed phrases or passwords. The captured credentials are sent to a hardcoded backend API at https://api.wagmiwallet.org/api/keys, along with additional user information such as wallet type and geolocation data. This poses a significant risk as any application using this package will inadvertently expose its users' sensitive information to attackers.

How To Fix

This package is malicious. Remove it and rotate any credentials it could have accessed.

npm uninstall oleh-modal

If it arrived as a transitive dependency, remove the package that pulled it in, then reinstall.

Workaround

As a temporary measure, avoid using the oleh-modal package in your application. Instead, consider implementing alternative wallet-connect modal components that are verified and secure.

Conclusion

The oleh-modal package has been identified as a malicious tool that compromises user security by harvesting sensitive information. It is essential for developers to remove this package from their applications and seek secure alternatives to protect their users.
