Background
MantisBT is an open-source bug tracking system that provides a user-friendly interface for managing software development projects. It allows users to report bugs, track issues, and manage project workflows efficiently. However, versions 2.28.3 and earlier are susceptible to a critical vulnerability that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code through improper handling of configuration values.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability arises in the admin 'Manage Configuration' feature (adm_config_set.php) of MantisBT. When an administrator sets a configuration value with a non-string type, the value is processed through a ConfigParser and Tokenizer, which invokes eval() with a 'return;' prefix. This prefix is intended to prevent code execution, but due to PHP's behavior of hoisting function and class declarations, an attacker can define a class in the eval()'d code. This class can then hijack a class loaded later via PHP's autoloader, leading to remote code execution as the web server user (www-data). This vulnerability requires authenticated administrator access to exploit.
