Background
bruteser is an npm package used for brute force testing of web applications. It allows users to test the security of their web applications by attempting to guess usernames and passwords. However, versions prior to 0.1.0 are vulnerable to a Path Traversal attack. This vulnerability occurs due to the package's failure to properly sanitize URLs, which allows attackers to access server files outside of the served folder using relative paths.
Vulnerability Detail
The Path Traversal vulnerability in bruteser allows an attacker to bypass the intended access restrictions and read or modify files outside of the intended directory. By manipulating the URL, an attacker can traverse the file system and access sensitive files or execute arbitrary code. This can lead to unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information, remote code execution, or other malicious activities.
How To Fix

FAQ
A Path Traversal attack, also known as Directory Traversal or Directory Climbing, is a web security vulnerability that allows an attacker to access files and directories outside of the intended directory. It occurs when a web application does not properly validate user input and allows directory traversal characters (such as '../') in file paths.
A Path Traversal vulnerability can have severe consequences, including unauthorized access to sensitive files, disclosure of sensitive information, remote code execution, and complete compromise of the affected system. It can also be used as a stepping stone for further attacks.
At the time of this advisory, there are no known public exploits specifically targeting this vulnerability in bruteser. However, it is important to promptly update to the fixed version to mitigate the risk of exploitation.
No, only versions prior to 0.1.0 are affected by this vulnerability. It is recommended to upgrade to version 0.1.0 or later to ensure the security of your application.
At the time of this advisory, there are no known alternative packages for bruteser that provide the same functionality without this vulnerability. It is recommended to update to the fixed version (0.1.0) or implement proper input validation and URL sanitization in your application code.
