Background

npm-user-validate is an npm package used for validating user emails. It provides a regular expression to validate email addresses. The package is widely used in npm ecosystems. However, versions before 1.0.1 are vulnerable to a regular expression denial of service (ReDoS) attack. This vulnerability can be exploited by providing long input strings beginning with '@' characters, causing the regex validation to take exponentially longer to process.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability in npm-user-validate arises from the inefficient regex used to validate user emails. An attacker can craft a malicious input string that triggers a ReDoS attack, causing the validation process to consume excessive CPU resources and potentially leading to a denial of service. The impact of this vulnerability can be severe, as it allows an attacker to disrupt the functionality of applications relying on npm-user-validate.
