Background
Apache Superset is an open-source data exploration and visualization platform. It allows users to create interactive dashboards and perform data analysis. The Markdown component in Apache Superset is used to provide additional information and descriptions for charts on a dashboard page. However, versions up to and including 0.38.0 are vulnerable to a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) attack. This allows a malicious user to inject JavaScript code into the Markdown component, which will be executed when a legitimate user views the dashboard page. The vulnerability can be exploited by creating a 'div' section and embedding a 'svg' element with malicious JavaScript code.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability in Apache Superset allows an attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the context of a user's browser. This can lead to various malicious actions, such as stealing sensitive information, performing unauthorized actions on behalf of the user, or spreading malware. The stored XSS vulnerability is triggered when a user accesses a dashboard page containing the malicious Markdown component. The JavaScript code embedded in the component is automatically executed, compromising the user's browser.
How To Fix
Latest published version: 6.1.0 as of 23 Oct 2026
pip install --upgrade "apache-superset==6.1.0"
Upgrading to it may include breaking changes; the version below is the minimum fixed release for this vulnerability.
If you need the minimum change
0.38.1
This is the first release that contains the fix.
pip install --upgrade "apache-superset==0.38.1"

Workaround
If upgrading to the latest version is not immediately feasible, users can mitigate the risk by disabling the Markdown component feature or implementing input validation and sanitization measures. Here is an example of how to disable the Markdown component in the Superset configuration file:
ENABLE_MARKDOWN_COMPONENT = False
By setting the ENABLE_MARKDOWN_COMPONENT variable to False, the vulnerable feature will be disabled, reducing the attack surface.
Conclusion
The stored cross-site scripting vulnerability in Apache Superset's Markdown component (CVE-2021-27907) allows an attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript code in the context of a user's browser. This can lead to various security risks, including data theft and unauthorized actions. Users are advised to upgrade to Apache Superset version 0.38.1 or later to fix the vulnerability. Alternatively, they can disable the Markdown component or implement input validation and sanitization measures. For further assistance with vulnerability remediation, please contact DevNack.com.
