Background
Graphite-web is a web application that provides a user interface for the Graphite time series database. It allows users to visualize and analyze data stored in the database. The vulnerable component, graphite-web/webapp/graphite/composer/views.py, contains a function called send_email. This function is responsible for sending emails through the SMTP server configured in Graphite. By default, the SMTP server is set to 'localhost'.
Vulnerability Detail
The send_email function in graphite-web/webapp/graphite/composer/views.py is vulnerable to Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF). An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to make the Graphite web server request any resource on the network. The response from the SSRF request is then encoded into an image file and sent to an email address specified by the attacker. This allows the attacker to exfiltrate sensitive information from the target system.
How To Fix
Latest published version: 1.1.10 as of 23 Oct 2026
pip install --upgrade "graphite-web==1.1.10"
Upgrading to it may include breaking changes; the version below is the minimum fixed release for this vulnerability.

Workaround
If you are unable to immediately upgrade or apply patches, you can manually remove the send_email function from the file webapp/graphite/composer/views.py. This function is not in use and removing it will not impact your Graphite installation.
Conclusion
The SSRF vulnerability in graphite-web's send_email function can be exploited by an attacker to exfiltrate sensitive information from the target system. It is recommended to upgrade your Graphite installation to version 1.1.6 or apply the relevant patches. If immediate action is not possible, you can remove the send_email function as a temporary workaround. For further assistance with vulnerability remediation, please contact DevNack.com.
