Background
OpenStack Keystone is an open-source identity service that provides authentication and authorization for other OpenStack services. It allows users to obtain tokens to access various resources within an OpenStack cloud environment. The EC2 API is a component of Keystone that provides compatibility with Amazon Web Services (AWS) EC2 API. This vulnerability affects versions of Keystone before 15.0.1 and 16.0.0.
Vulnerability Detail
The EC2 API in OpenStack Keystone does not enforce a signature TTL (Time To Live) check for AWS Signature V4. This allows an attacker to intercept the Authorization header, which contains the signed request information, and reuse it to generate new OpenStack tokens indefinitely. By exploiting this vulnerability, an attacker can gain unauthorized access to resources within the OpenStack environment.
How To Fix
Latest published version: 30.0.0 as of 22 Oct 2026
pip install --upgrade "keystone==30.0.0"
Upgrading to it may include breaking changes; the version below is the minimum fixed release for this vulnerability.
If you need the minimum change
15.0.1
This is the first release that contains the fix.
pip install --upgrade "keystone==15.0.1"

Conclusion
The vulnerability in OpenStack Keystone's EC2 API allows an attacker to bypass the signature TTL check for AWS Signature V4, leading to unauthorized access to OpenStack resources. It is crucial to upgrade to Keystone version 15.0.1 or later to mitigate this vulnerability. For further support on vulnerability remediation, please contact DevNack.com.
