Background
Pillow is a popular Python imaging library that provides support for opening, manipulating, and saving many different image file formats. It is widely used in various applications for image processing and manipulation. However, versions of Pillow before 6.2.2 are vulnerable to a Denial of Service (DoS) attack due to uncontrolled resource consumption. This vulnerability is caused by a flaw in the FpxImagePlugin.py module, which calls the range function on an unvalidated 32-bit integer if the number of bands is large. On Windows running 32-bit Python, this can result in an OverflowError or MemoryError due to the 2 GB limit. On Linux running 64-bit Python, this can lead to the process being terminated by the OOM (Out of Memory) killer.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability in Pillow before version 6.2.2 allows an attacker to exploit the uncontrolled resource consumption issue, resulting in a Denial of Service condition. By providing a specially crafted image file, an attacker can trigger the flaw and cause the affected application to consume excessive resources, leading to system instability or crash. This vulnerability poses a significant risk to applications that utilize Pillow for image processing, especially those running on Windows with 32-bit Python or Linux with 64-bit Python.
How To Fix
