Background
pip is a package management system used to install and manage software packages written in Python. It is the standard package manager for the Python programming language. Pip allows users to easily install, upgrade, and remove Python packages from the PyPI repository. However, prior to version 1.3, pip used HTTP to retrieve packages from PyPI and did not perform integrity checks on package contents.
Vulnerability Detail
The vulnerability (CVE-2013-1629) in pip arises from the lack of proper input validation during the 'pip install' operation. This allows man-in-the-middle attackers to execute arbitrary code by crafting a malicious response to the installation request. As pip did not perform integrity checks on package contents, an attacker could tamper with the package during transit and inject malicious code. This vulnerability poses a moderate risk as it can lead to the execution of arbitrary code on the target system.
How To Fix
Latest published version: 26.2.2 as of 22 Oct 2026
pip install --upgrade "pip==26.2.2"
