Background

The linux-libc-dev package is a development package that provides the necessary header files and libraries for compiling and linking programs against the Linux kernel. It is a crucial component for building software that interacts with the kernel. The vulnerability identified as CVE-2024-35843 affects the linux-libc-dev package version 6.1.90-1. This vulnerability is related to the I/O page fault handler in the kernel's iommu/vt-d subsystem.

Vulnerability Detail

The vulnerability arises from the existing I/O page fault handler's method of locating a PCI device by calling pci_get_domain_bus_and_slot(). This function searches the list of all PCI devices until the desired device is found. To improve efficiency, the function is replaced with device_rbtree_find() to search the device within the probed device rbtree. However, this introduces a potential use-after-free issue. If a device is released by the IOMMU subsystem after device_rbtree_find() and before iopf_get_dev_fault_param(), it can lead to a use-after-free problem. To address this, a mutex is added to synchronize the I/O page fault reporting path and the IOMMU release device path.

Conclusion

The vulnerability identified as CVE-2024-35843 affects the linux-libc-dev package version 6.1.90-1. It is recommended to update the package to a version that includes the patch for this vulnerability. This will ensure the necessary synchronization mechanism is in place to prevent the use-after-free problem. For further support on vulnerability remediation, please contact DevNack.com.
